Figure painting in oils – Spring 2017

This spring we’ve painted on a larger canvas – a (nearly) full figure oil painting over the course of 4 weeks. Starting with preparing the background with graded colour in acrylics, we then used a grid to get our image onto paper. This was transferred to the canvas and the figure was painted in oils. Finally, the whole canvas was glazed to tidy any smudges and give a consistent appearance to the work.

The majority of people managed to finish their portraits, some have a few further details to work on at home, but all in all a fantastic set of pictures. Well done to you all. There does appear to be a bit of glare from the camera in the taking of the photos – this is one of the problems with the sheen on oils paints but hopefully you can get an idea of how well these have turned out.

    Impressionist Portraits

What fun we had with these impressionist portraits. After getting over the initial nerves at painting a couple of portraits in a 2.5 hour session, let alone portraits from the great impressionists, the paint was flowing and faces started to appear. This was a great exercise in a number of things. Firstly, practicing portraits without…

    Three Fruits Study

We’re looking at small, speedy painting in this block of lessons. We’re concentrating on getting an idea of the subject across with minimum fuss, learning to paint what we see plus practice colour finding. Whether we like to paint in detail or loosely, this is a good exercise to do as it requires little time…

    Portraits over 5 weeks

A bit late bringing this post to you – these portraits were painted in lessons during January and the beginning of February. We took our time over these paintings; once we’d sketched the image onto tracing paper using the grid method, we transferred it to our canvas. Some folks had prepared a plain canvas with…

    Cezanne Still Life

After a week of portraits, some students fancied trying a still life subject so we chose Cezanne as a reference for his bold colours and brushwork. These were painted in a similar manner to the portraits – in oils, around an hour per painting. I think they’ve come up with some great paintings. These little…

    Summer Workshop 2016

A bit late in the posting, but here are the results of a couple of workshops ran in the summer of 2016. The theme was summer figures in oils, painted in about 5 hours. As with my classes, there is a mix of abilities with some folks who have been painting a while and others who…

    1. Hi Michelle.
      Thank you for your comments.
I run classes in Southwell- my next set will start at the end of July – would you like me to add you to my class email list? I’ll be sending out details in an email in the next week or so. I run them on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings. Cost depends on the number of weeks but works out at £15 per session (2.5 hours).
I do provide one to one, cost is £20 per hour and is good if you have something specific you want to paint/draw.
      Jackie
