Portrait Demo 3

A bit long in the coming – despite lockdown, life has been pretty hectic – here is my latest portrait demonstration.

As with the previous demos, I’m using a limited palette of Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and white.

These are small exercises to increase familiarity with the colours and colour mixing in general and are great practise in drawing and painting. I’m not going to get upset if they don’t work out and I’m likely to have learnt something so the effort is never wasted.

Here’s the image I used as reference – more a guide to inspire than something to copy exactly.

Do have a go yourself – I’d love to see your work.

If you have any difficulties, please contact me and I shall do my best to advise.

The next layers will be oils.   I’m recording this so, hopefully, will have a YouTube clip with carols for you soon after I’ve finished it.

    Gridding Technique

There are many ways to get an image accurately transferred to paper for drawing or painting. One which works well when you’re wanting to enlarge your image is the gridding method. This involves drawing equal numbers of rows and columns on your reference photo and your paper then accurately copying the contents of each square….

    Portrait Sketch 2

Here’s my second oil portrait sketch. Why not try it for yourself – it’s great practise for proportions, colour mixing and tones. Contact me if you have any questions or want me to provide any more information in future recordings. These portraits are only small 7×5″ so if I’m not totally happy with what I’ve…

  1. Hi Jackie
Another challenge for us all. Like the background colour – it should help with getting the skin tones correct.
