Colour mixing for skin tones

I’ve created this video to accompany the portrait demonstrations I intend to do while we’re all having to stay indoors. I’ve chosen basic colours to mix skin tone, colours which you should hopefully already have if you’ve got acrylics or oils in your paint box. Using these 5 colours you can mix a vast array of hues – it just takes practise of looking at your reference and working out what colour to add to bring your mix close the the colour you want.

Being a colour geek, I love a colour mixing challenge so if you have different colours to these and are struggling to mix your required colours, let me know and I’ll do my best to advise you.

Colours I’ve used are:

  • Burnt Umber
  • Cadmium Red
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • French Ultramarine
  • Titanium White

Taking decent photos following the progress of a painting and, hardest of all, writing blurb to accompany it, makes you really think about what…

  • New Year, New Goals

Well it’s been a very productive start to the week, due mainly, I think, to the simple task of setting some goals for the first quarter of this year. As a result of this, I’ve scheduled various tasks in my diary to ensure I have time to paint. ‘Obvious’ you may say; ‘been doing that…

    Gridding Technique

There are many ways to get an image accurately transferred to paper for drawing or painting. One which works well when you’re wanting to enlarge your image is the gridding method. This involves drawing equal numbers of rows and columns on your reference photo and your paper then accurately copying the contents of each square….

    Happy Christmas 2019

Here’s a speedy painting of this years Christmas card – Madonna and child (not newborn) so probably around the time the wise men were visiting. Everything started off fine, but went pear shaped around her chin just over half way through – goodness knows what I was doing! This is why I enjoy oils so…
